Our History

Since 1949, when Arthur and Lucille Powell began serving families as Powell Mortuary, our community has changed in many ways. Our firm also matured and changed to meet the needs of a growing community. From our humble beginning we have been there to assist families in providing the perfect tribute to those who have died.

In 1962, the Powells were succeeded by Spencer Bothwell that served the community as Acheson & Graham Arlington Chapel, remaining until 1975. It was that year that Roger and Gina Lori together with Bill and Rose Montgomery formed a partnership as Lori and Montgomery Funeral Home. 1978 proved to be a year of change, Randy and Ruth Akes purchased the funeral home, Bill and Rose Montgomery retired and Roger and Gina Lori went on to own and operate several successful funeral homes throughout California.

In 2002, the Akes Family purchased the Grimes Funeral Home in Corona, founded in 1947 by John Brown and operated as the Brown Funeral Home until 1953 when Robert "Bob" and Margaret Grimes became owners and began providing Corona, Norco and surrounding communities with the areas finest funeral, cremation and ambulance service. It was common to see a Grimes Ambulance taking a new mother and baby home from Corona Community or Riverside General Hospital, always free of charge. The Grimes family served this area with integrity, compassion and care for 49 years.

Today, the Akes Family continues to provide local ownership and guidance. While the name has changed and the ambulance service is no longer a part of our firm, we strive to provide excellence in all of our services. Every day we come to together knowing that we can, in some way, provide a service that assists families in creating a unique service that celebrates a life.

We focus our attention on the families we serve. Our family and staff is knowledgeable and friendly, the facilities and grounds are immaculately cared for and our pricing is fair. We know that you will be so pleased with the service you receive that we personally guarantee your satisfaction. Today, without question, Akes Family Funeral Homes offer the best value in this area.
