Yolanda was born at Lincoln Hospital in Los Angeles, CA on December 2, 1942 to Frank Bernal Grijalva and Trini (Tonie) Velarde Smythe. She died at home, surrounded by family, in Riverside, CA on September 9, 2020 of Pancreatic Cancer.
She was predeceased by her father, mother, half-brother Ralph Grijalva and ex-husband, Luis Hetzler, Sr.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 41 years, Edward, son Luis (Ling) Hetzler, daughter Lisa (Fiance', Bill) Hetzler, step-children Eddie (Monica), Frank (Denise) Zazueta and Connie Ann (Jaime) Queen. Grandchildren, Brian C. McCoy, Crystal (Raymond) Whiting, Lauren, Zachary and Nathan Zazueta. Great-Grandchildren, Desmond J. McCoy, Raymond F. Whiting and Colton R. Whiting. Sisters Carmen G. Arroyos and Lucille Rodriquez. Sisters-in-law, Martha O. Hetzler, Mary (Charles) Laizure and Rosie (Richard – d) Zazueta and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
Yolanda, also known as “Mitzi” lived and worked in Los Angeles for 35 years. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in El Sereno in 1961. Yolanda worked for the West Coast Branch of The International Silver Company, in Los Angeles (1968 - 1973), and the Los Angeles Unified School District, at Garfield High School (1974 - 1976).
In 1977 she moved to Brea, CA. 1978 she was hired by the City of Brea Police Department as a Police Records Clerk. Three Years later (1981) she was appointed to the position of Police Records Manager and retired after 22 years of service. She was an active and lifetime member of CLEARS (California Law Enforcement Association of Records Supervisors) and maintained a strong bond of friendship with a core group of members. She served as President of the Southern Chapter for 2 years in the early 1990’s.
Yolanda was best known for her love of reading, gardening, music, photography, scrapbooking, cooking for family, friends and interacting with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Yolanda will be missed forever and she will always remain in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, Yolanda requested donations be made in her name to a local Battered Women’s Shelter.
A memorial service will be held on December 2, 2020 at 11:00AM in Grimes-Akes Family's "Grace Chapel" in Corona, California. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, please contact a member of the family if you wish to attend because attendance will be limited.
