WILLIAM TILLIS Obituary

William Peter Tillis, affectionately known as "Billy" ("Bumpty") was born on June 13, 1943 to Carrie Edna McGowan and Wilson Tillis in Houston, TX.  He received his formal education at Phillis Wheatley High School and upon graduation, enlisted in the  U.S. Airforce, serving his country until his honorable discharge in 1964.
In 1978, he married the love of his life, Ms. Bette Davis. Their blessed union was a true example of devotion, loyalty and commitment. Together, they strived to provide a life of comfort, joy and happiness for their children.

As a talented singer and songwriter, known as "Billy Nitro" his musical career would afford him the recording of several songs by way of Resist Records, including his soulful rendition, "As Sweet as your Love for Me" in 1970.
Whether horseback riding, camping or simply going for a stroll, he truly loved God's nature and being outdoors.  He never met a stranger, and considered everyone a friend. He would often say, "Mi Amigos"!

He showed his love of community by embracing his position as the Park Youth and Recreational Director for the city of Gardena, CA.  There, he empowered countless children and young adults serving as a role model and mentor.

His passion for civil rights also included his volunteering with the well known organization of The Black Panther Party of the Southern California Chapter. This journey would later pave the way to his position as a Polling Site Field Operator, during which time he experienced one of the most memorable events of his life, the historic 2008 election of President Barack Obama.
His proudest accomplishment was his family. His hours of storytelling with his children as well as his grandchildren would be considered precious moments as he constantly reminded them of their worth and his unconditional love.

He was an avid student of the Bible, searching and learning the scriptures, sharing the goodness of God and the beauty of the Holy Spirit. He walked in humility, always mindful and thankful of the ultimate sacrifice and the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

At the onset of his illness and the disabilities affecting his speech, we witnessed his strength as he made every effort to communicate with loved ones. A true soldier, as he fought his greatest battle.

On the afternoon of January 13th, at 12:50pm, the Lord whispered, "Billy, it's time to come home. Well done thy good and faithful servant."
William is preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Martha McGowan, mother Carrie McGowan, father Wilson Tillis, brother Larry Malbrue and sister Carrie Malbrue.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 43 years, Bette Tillis, sisters Martha (Skirt) Cammack, Julia Ellen Gordon; Four daughters, Demetria Tillis- Turner (Jerry Turner), Adrianne Bradley (Jerry Bradley), Sabrina Tillis-Brown (Shaun Brown) and Angela Morgan (Daniel Morgan); Two sons, David Tillis (Barbara) and Harold Tillis (Michelle); 18 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

We consider it an honor and privilege paying homage to our fallen soldier and are comforted in the promises of the scriptures, the blessed Hope of Glory, that we will one day be reunited.
