Virginia Jo (Rymer) Sauls, a Riverside native and longtime Sonora, California resident, died Dec. 29 in Moreno Valley, California, at the age of 95.
She was born Oct. 30, 1929, to Joseph and Margaret Rymer in Riverside, California. Virginia attended Riverside Poly High School and Southern California Bible College, where she met her husband-to-be, Jack Sauls. The couple wed in 1950 in Riverside, and the two were married for 67 years until he preceded her in death in 2018. The Saulses lived in Riverside and Modesto before moving to Sonora in 1964.
Virginia's first job after high school was as a secretary for Johnson Tractor Company in Riverside. After moving to Sonora, she worked many years as the secretary for two Superintendents at the Tuolumne County Schools office, also serving as the county credentials technician. All the while, she tirelessly supported her husband and three sons in myriad athletic and school endeavors. After retirement, she was active in the Sonora Emblem Club through the Sonora Elks Lodge.
Retirement also found Virginia traveling thousands upon thousands of miles as a recreational vehicle enthusiast. She and her husband were members of numerous RV clubs and, during their time on the road, visited Alaska and Mexico many times. Their travels also included a fall colors tour of New England, visits to many national parks in the United States and Canada, and a memorable excursion to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota with lifelong friends Ed and Jan Ivy, of Merced.
Virginia is survived by sons, Kevin (Colette), of Post Falls, Idaho, and Steve (Shannon), of Moreno Valley, California; daughter-in-law Erin Sauls, of Fernley, Nevada; and by nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Her first son, Bruce, preceded her in death in 1985.
Interment was private.
