Scotty Benjamin Montgomery
Resident of Riverside, CA
July 31, 1980 - May 10, 2025
Scotty Benjamin Montgomery, 44, of Riverside, CA passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 10, 2025, surrounded by his family. He fought a courageous year and a half battle with advanced stage esophageal cancer. Scotty was kind, funny, handy, never met a stranger, and so incredibly loved.
Born in Giddings, Texas, Scotty graduated from Giddings High School and went on to take courses at Texas State University in San Marcos, Austin Community College, and The University of Texas at Austin. In 2004, Scotty met the love of his life, Elizabeth. They married in 2012, and in 2013 relocated to Southern California to be near family. In 2014 they welcomed their son, Carter, and in 2017 their son, William, was born.
Scotty built a career he loved in the restaurant industry, both in Austin and California, where his love of food and people brought joy to those around him. He especially loved getting to know his customers and colleagues, sharing stories, and becoming friends. A few years ago, he joined So Cal Gas and thrived helping people and using his technical skills alongside his wonderful friends and coworkers at the Downey Base.
Music was a lifelong passion for Scotty. From playing baritone in his high school band to attending countless concerts and festivals, music was ever present in his life. He loved sharing his favorite songs and bands with his sons—especially his all-time favorite, The Smashing Pumpkins.
He loved sports and was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys and Mavericks fan, and more recently a Dodgers fan. Scotty loved to travel and have adventures from deep sea fishing off the Texas coast to taking in the beauty of Hawaii to playing poker in Las Vegas to exploring the peaceful mountains in the Eastern Sierras to annual weeks at the beach in Carlsbad and visiting friends and family across the country. Some of Scotty’s favorite sayings were “rowdy”, “legit”, and “all the joy”! Above all, Scotty's sons were his greatest joy in life.
Scotty is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; beloved sons, Carter and William; mother, Susanna (Roland); father, Sam; mother-in-law, Trisha; father-in-law, Bill (Earla); sisters, Tana (Rayland) and Samantha; brother-in-law, Matthew (Cara); and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Celebrations of Life will be held in Carlsbad, CA on August 2nd at 4:30pm at PRK101 and in Georgetown, TX on July 26th at 11am at First Baptist Church. Please reach out to Elizabeth at scottymontgomeryfamily@gmail.com regarding Celebration of Life details and/or donating to Scotty's sons' college funds. Donations may also be made to Pickles Group and Kesem, organizations that support children of parents with cancer.
To all of the amazing family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and care teams at Kaiser and City of Hope, thank you all for your support and love during such a challenging time. Please honor Scotty by striking up a conversation with a stranger, attending a concert, checking out a sporting event, lending a hand to someone in need, or creating an amazing memory with your loved ones.
