Robert Edwin Stilwell, known affectionately as Bob, passed away on September 9, 2024, at the age of 100, in Riverside, CA. Born November 27, 1923, in Anaheim, CA, Bob lived a full century marked by dedication to his family, faith, country, and profession.
Bob was a WWII Army veteran, who bravely served in the pivotal Battle of the Bulge, a testament to his courage and resilience. After his honorable military service, he continued his education at Santa Clara University (SCU), which laid the foundation for his subsequent career as a mechanical engineer. Bob dedicated 34 years to FMC Corporation, where his problem-solving and inventor skills came to the forefront, significantly contributing to advancements in his field.
While attending SCU, he met the love of his life Madeline, a nursing student at St. Mary’s in San Francisco. During their courtship, they enjoyed many formal dances at the "fancy" hotels in The City. Married for 73 years, they navigated the joys and challenges of raising 9 children. Bob, a devoted husband and father is survived by his wife Madeline, children Stephen (Margarita), Cynthia (Daniel), Thomas (Jackie), Michael (Jackie), Erin (Jay), Kathleen (Robert), Joseph (Tina), and Kerry (Tal). He was also a cherished grandfather to 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Bob’s family was the cornerstone of his life, providing him much joy and fulfillment.
Bob was preceded in death by his son Kenneth (Kathy) and his sister Mary Cornell. His legacy continues through his extensive family, including many nephews, nieces, and other relatives who will miss his presence and guidance.
A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at St. Catherine's Church in Riverside, CA on October 15, 2024, at 10:00 am. This will be followed by a service at Riverside National Cemetery, where Bob will be laid to rest with full military honors, commemorating his service to the nation. His life, marked by his contributions and love, will be remembered and celebrated by all who knew him.
Madeline's final words to Bob were, "Don't give St. Peter a hard time at the pearly gates."
