Micheal McKelroy, 80, passed away on March 14, 2025, at his home in Riverside. He was surrounded by his family, as he always was.
His family includes his wife Anita of La Feria Texas. And children; Micheal Robert of Livingston Texas. Anna of Temecula, Ca. Kathleen of Monterey, Ca. Micheal Jr. of Menifee, Ca. Daniel of Lake Elsinore, Ca. And Robert of Riverside. He had 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
His Siblings are Brenda Davenport, Daniel Candlish, Ray Candlish and Linda Green.
Micheal was born on August 12, 1944, to Suda and Daniel Candlish in Searcy, Arkansas.
In 1962, he graduated from boot camp in Parris Island South Carolina and started his career in the United States Marine Corps (USMC). He served 3 tours in Vietnam and received 2 purple hearts. He also received many awards and decorative ribbons of service.
In 1970, he met Anita Martinez while stationed at Camp Pendelton. They married on September 5, 1971. In 1985, after serving 23 years, he retired from the USMC at the rank of Master Sergeant.
He worked for Southern California Edison as a Security Officer for five years. He also worked at T.A.S.K. in Orange County as an advocate for children with disabilities. He served on the Alvord School Board. He also worked at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics Organizing Committee as a judge for shooting events at Campo de Casa. He worked steadfastly with Veterans, assisting them with benefits, housing and mental health.
He also testified before Congress on behalf of Veterans. He spoke at and worked for Veteran Stand Down events throughout California where he advocated for homeless veterans and their families. He was also the Commander at the Arlington VFW Post 9223.
Even though he retired from the USMC, he always remained a Marine. He always served his family, country and community until his passing.
Services will be held at Grimes-Akes Family Home at 500 W 7th Street in Corona, Ca. on April 11th at noon.
Military Honors will be at Riverside National Cemetery at 2:45 pm.
