Mauro Orona, Jr. was born in El Paso, TX on August 23, 1937, to Mauro Orona Sr. and Maria Chavez Orona. Mauro
peacefully passed away in his sleep on December 18, 2022, in Cape Coral, FL.
Mauro is preceded in death by his first wife, Dolores “Lola” Castro Orona, son Mauro Orona, III, grandson Alex Lazo and
wife, Maria Teresa Lazo Orona. Siblings Ismael Orona, Abel Orona, Sophia Morales, and Consuelo Orona also preceded him
in death.
Mauro grew up with his seven siblings in El Paso, TX. He had a strong sense of family and deeply missed his siblings as life
separated them on different paths. Mauro is a Veteran who served in the US Army from 1955 to 1958, spending time in
Japan and Korea.
In 1960, Mauro married Dolores “Lola” Castro Orona, whom he met in El Paso, TX. They had two children, Mauro Orona III
and Ricardo Orona, and were happily married from 1960 until Dolores’s untimely death in 1986.
Ricardo and his wife Wendy had two beautiful children Lucas (Mary Kaltenberg) Orona and Maurisa (Nick) Hughes. Mauro
had been looking forward to meeting Lucas’ infant daughter, Arrietty Lola, and Maurisa’s baby, which is due May 2023.
Mauro was a sincere, patient, and loving man with much integrity. He honored his commitments and often sacrificed
himself to care for his family. He had a deep faith in God and instilled this faith in his children through teaching and
example. Mauro served many years as a deacon in the Española church of Christ in New Mexico. He handcrafted the letters
on the church building’s sign, and his craftsmanship can still be seen today. In his later years in California, Mauro became
actively involved and volunteered in the Catholic Church.
In March of 1989, Mauro found love again and married Maria Teresa Lazo Orona in Riverside, CA. In marrying Maria Teresa,
he was welcomed into her family and took on roles of father, grandfather, and eventually great-grandfather. While in
California, Mauro continued his active role in the church, this time volunteering his time and talents to the Catholic Church
in Riverside.
Mauro was a skilled carpenter and made numerous cabinets, porch swings, cradles, etc., for friends and family. In addition,
he loved working in his yard. In his later years, Mauro was an avid bike rider and enjoyed cleaning up the local roadside of
aluminum cans and garbage. He would often find lost wallets or cell phones and return them to their owners.
Mauro was loved and will be deeply missed by many. He is survived by his siblings Elisa, Ruben, and Gloria, his children Ray,
Genovieve, Ricardo, Ruben, Max, and Jacqueline, their spouses, nineteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and
many nieces and nephews.
Mauro had a long life that took him to many unexpected and exciting places. He touched many lives and exuded love,
patience, and kindness. Although he will be missed by many, Mauro was a faithful servant of the Lord and is now at peace,
enjoying his heavenly reward.
Funeral Mass will be Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 at 12 noon in St Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church, Riverside, California
Graveside service will be at Riverside National Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
