Leonard William Johnson Sr. was unexpectedly called home to heaven on May 12, 2024 at the age of 70.
Leonard was born on August 25, 1953, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Schenley High School in 1971 and went on to study at the University of Pittsburgh, where he met the love of his life, Sandra Michele Stevenson. They married in November of 1975 and their marriage was blessed with three children. An avid athlete in his youth, Leonard encouraged his children to participate in sports and even took on the role of coach for their youth league basketball teams.
Leonard was a man of few words, but he made an impression with his disarmingly dark sense of humor. When you least expected it he would lean in with a conspiratorial grin and make a witty quip that left you in stitches. He loved all things transportation--planes, trains, and automobiles--and managed to convey that passion into a career working in the airline industry. Upon his retirement he delighted in spending his time taking photos, cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and enjoying quality time with his family. Among his most cherished roles in life was that of PapPap to his beloved grandchildren--whether he was dressing up as DJ Lance from Yo Gabba Gabba or giving “horseback” rides in the living room, he was always willing to do anything to put a smile on their faces.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola Page, his sister, Leslie Page, and his brothers, Philip Page, and Andrew Page. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Michele Johnson, his children, Leonard Jr. (Annika), Steven (Suzana), and Michele Johnson, his grandchildren, Maya, Alyssa, Lionel, and Amy Johnson, his brothers, Anthony Page, Michael (Diane) Paige, and Ronald Page, and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, other family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 24th 2024 at 12:00pm at Akes Family Funeral home in Riverside with a burial to follow at Riverside National Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held immediately prior to the memorial service from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.
