Seargent First Class Lester Allan Whitis United States Army
Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great grandfather. Passed away on the 28th of February 2026 in Nuevo, California.
Born on the 13th of July 1947 in Columbus, Ohio to Lester Whitis, and Mabel Whitis.
Joined the Army and served multiple tours in Vietnam as an Aviation Mechanic on the famed UH-1 Iroquois “Huey” Helicopter. After a highly successful career in the Army. Earning the Vietnam cross of Gallantry, Vietnam service medal, Republic of Vietnam campaign medal and numerous Purple Heart medals with a “V “for Valor.
He went on to teach in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) as a Senior Enlisted Instructor at Perris and Riverside Poly High School. He was not just a Teacher, he was a mentor to many a student who were the greatest beneficiaries of his tough love. His influence and guidance not only shaped his immediate students, but it will also have lasting effects for his student's children for generations to come. many of his student went on to very successful careers in the Armed Forces of the United States of America and very prominent rolls in the communities they now live in.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Mabel Whitis, Brother Howard Matthews, Daughter Christina Whitis and Nephew Johnny Matthews
He is survived by his Loving Wife Margaret Whitis, Sons Daniel and Mark Whitis, Son Martin A. Silva, Grandchildren Jennifer Whitis, Brittany Whitis and Nathan Whitis. Great grandchildren Victoria, Gabriel Nichole, Jamison and Ophelia.
Services will be held, 30th of March 2026 at Riverside National Cemetery at 9:30 am with reception to follow.
