Leonard James Vaccaro Jr. was born on October 8, 1941, in Rome, New York, to Leonard Vaccaro Sr. of Potenza, Italy, and his mother, Anna Gilbert of Rome, New York. He was the oldest of four brothers, growing up alongside Pete, Jerry, and Vito. Leonard spent much of his childhood outdoors, fishing and exploring with his brothers, forming a lifelong bond with family, nature, and adventure.
Leonard had a strong presence and carried himself with confidence. He was outspoken and stubborn in the best way. Proud of his Italian roots, he had an old school style about him. Always well dressed, he carried a polished look that blended classic mob-era sharpness with a rugged cowboy edge.
In high school, he met Yvonne Malorzo, and the two quickly fell in love. After graduating, they moved to Riverside, California, married, and started a new life together. In 1972, they welcomed their one and only child, a daughter named Lannie, after her father.
In California, Leonard worked at Disneyland in his early years, then spent many years as an automotive mechanic at Plaza Automotive. He later built a career with Riverside County Probation as a counselor at Twin Pines Ranch in Banning, where he helped juveniles and truly found his element. Ranch life suited him naturally and brought out his cowboy side even more. He felt at home in wide open spaces, earning the nickname “Cowboy” from staff. Many of the juveniles later reached out to thank Len for the impact he had on their lives. He remained there until retirement.
Outside of work, Leonard enjoyed working on cars, bowling, fishing, hunting, shooting, and anything that kept him outdoors. Being outside was where he felt most himself. In his younger years, he was also quite the pool player.
Leonard is survived by his daughter, Lannie Zavala (Vaccaro), and her husband Richard; his brother Jerry Vaccaro and wife Gale; his sister Betty Ann Dippel (Rome, NY); his grandchildren Zoe V. Vaccaro-Zavala, Chazz L. Vaccaro-Zavala, Matt Zavala, Cody Zavala (Linda), Francheska Zavala; and his great-grandchildren Ayden Zavala, Zayne Zavala, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Leonard will be remembered for his rugged way of life spent hunting, fishing, trapping, and living on his own terms. A true cowboy at heart, cigarette in hand, hat on his head, and boots on his feet. His presence was unmistakable and inspirational to all.
Memorial Service will be on Friday, January 30, 2026 in Akes Family's "Chapel of the Chimes" at 11:00 am.
