JYOTI KUMAR Obituary

Jyoti  Irene Butt was born in Pune, India on March 15, 1945. Her parents, Major William Butt and Mary Butt, later settled down in Aurangabad, India. Jyoti was a lawyer but did not pursue a law career. She chose to devote herself fully to the role of a wife and a mother. She would quip, “I practice law at home and win every case!” She was the advocate, the jury and the judge!.

Jyoti and Dr.Samuel  Kumar were married on February 10, 1971 in India.  They had prayed much making sure it was God’s perfect will that they should be life partners. Jyoti knelt daily on a carpet in her home and earnestly prayed. One day, God spoke to her from the Scripture, “He has done all things well.” (Mark 7:37) It was in the past tense as if the marriage had already taken place with God’s approval. Recently Jyoti and Samuel looked back on the 53 years of their married life and they praised God saying, “He has indeed done all things well!”

Jyoti was an enthusiastic gardener. She never ceased to wonder at God’s creative genius. She would admire the petals of the flowers, the color and variety of plants and fruits, the mystery of dead plants coming back to life in the spring, and would praise the Creator for His handiwork. She would speak of the Creator’s “eternal power and deity.”(Romans 1:10)

Jyoti was a giver. She would give liberally to anyone in need. She would send flowers, food and financial help whenever and wherever needed. She always remembered the words of the Lord Jesus, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

Jyoti was a lively conversationalist. She would respectfully hear those of other faiths, and would express her own convictions and faith. She would share with others how Jesus Christ changed her life radically when she gave her heart to Him as a teenager. Even on her deathbed in the hospital, she spoke to a circle of visitors and quoted the words of Christ and pressed everyone to take eternity seriously. She said, “Jesus wants you in heaven. I also want you to be with me in heaven.”  Jyoti would interact with the nurses and would ask about their lives. A couple of them wiped their tears when Jyoti spoke to them.

Jyoti impacted many lives. She wanted everything in her life to redound to the glory of God. Her principle was, “Sola Deo Gloria ” (Glory to God alone) Her life and death embodied her motto.

Jyoti is survived by her husband, Dr. Samuel Kumar, daughter Mary, Son Dr. Stephen Kumar, daughter-in-law Joan and 3 grandsons- Josiah, Boaz and Jonah.
