It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Van Dusen, a devoted father,
proud grandfather, brother, decorated Marine. His honesty and generosity touched the lives of
many. Jim passed away peacefully in his home on April 30, 2025, at the age of 82, leaving
behind a legacy of service, love, and unwavering kindness.
Born on December 4, 1942, in Monmouth, Illinois, Jim dedicated his life to his country and
family. He grew up in Iowa, the oldest child, surrounded by the chaos and joy of a big family.
The bond he had with his brothers and sisters was deep and lifelong and Jim cherished that
connection —filled with shared memories, laughter, and a loyalty that never wavered. Lloyd &
Sandra, Russ & Barbie, Joe & Shelia, Donivan, Judy & John, Joan & James, and Joann & Rick
each have their own stories and special memories of Jim. But one thing they shared is the deep
sense of love, respect, and admiration felt for him. That love and loyalty didn’t stop with his
generation. Jim passed those values on to his children, teaching them the importance of
sticking together, supporting one another, and cherishing family above all else.
Jim was a proud Marine, he served with honor, courage, and integrity — values that remained
the cornerstone of his life long after his military service ended. After completing his service, Jim
followed a new path westward and made his home in California, a place he grew to love and
where he built the life he always wanted. He married Debby and they spent 30 years and had 2
children together. Jim was the cherished father of two daughters, Jamie and Cori, who were the
light of his life. His pride only grew with the arrival of his three granddaughters, Finley, Kolbi and
Wellsley, who lovingly knew him as Pops — a role he embraced with warmth, humor, and infinite
patience.
Jim had a special place in his heart for the holiday season. Christmas was his favorite time of
year, a season he filled with joy, laughter, and twinkling lights. It was during those times that his
giving spirit shone brightest, spoiling family with gifts and overeating until we napped. He also
held a deep affection for purple flowers and his beloved late dog, Tanner, who was more than a
companion — Tanner was family.
Those who knew Jim, will remember his honesty — never sugarcoating, always sincere — and
his giving spirit. He gave without expectation, helped without hesitation, and loved without
limits. Jim will be dearly missed by his daughters, granddaughters, brothers, sisters, extended
family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service will be held at the Riverside National Cemetery, located at 22495 Van Buren
Blvd., Riverside, CA 92518, on May 23, 2025, at 2:45pm. Please arrive no later than 2:30pm
