Edward Barrelle Hayes (nicknamed Sonny), age 80, was born on February 23, 1942, and passed away in the hospital in Ontario, California on September 17, 2022, due to respiratory
complications. Edward was born in Bienville, Louisiana and spent most of his childhood in Little Rock, Arkansas and Lucerne Valley, California. As an adult he lived in Victorville, California and
Canon City, Colorado.
Edward joined the Army in 1962 where he trained as a mechanic. He worked most of his adult life for the Department of the Navy as a government employee at the Marine Corps Logistics
Base in Barstow, California as a machinist. He eventually retired from that job and completed commercial truck driver training.
Edward loved spending time coaching little league games, playing dominoes, and reading. He had a way of cheating at dominoes that made you wonder if you imagined that he was
cheating. He treated all children like they were his own. He was very strict when it came to education and made sure he did whatever he could to get his children through school.
Edward is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janice Hayes; his daughter Tina Marie Barham (Kevin); his Son Edward Berralle Hayes, III (Levon); his brother-in-law Eddie Long (Janice); his
grandchildren Marcus Anthony Frazier, Christopher Aaron Betts, Devan Hayes, Katara Hayes and, Robert Wells; his great grandchildren, Marcus Anthony Frazier II, Malaki Frazier, CJ Betts,
Trinity Betts, Tyson Betts, Alaena Williams, Jaeden Williams, Devan Hayes Jr, Devan Hayes lll, Devanie Hayes. his nieces and nephews, Michelle Allen (Preston), Gene Patrick, Yolanda Peppermuller (Dennis), Terrill Hayes (Donna), and all their children Auston, Kabria, Garrin, Jolan, Afton, Viala, Brigit, Olivia, Sophia, Alexander, Isaiah, Penny, Summer, Tabari, Bernard Jr, Derrick, Theresa and Sasonya; the Garrett family, the Ellis family, and many more great nieces, great nephews, cousins and “adopted” family throughout the high desert, California, Arkansas, Colorado, Montana, Louisiana, Nevada and other parts of the U.S.; he was preceded in death by his mother, Dilcie Mae Hempstead; his father Robert Hayes Sr.; his sister and brothers, Maxcine Patrick, Robert Hayes, Jr (Mary and Desi). and Bernard Smith (Alberta); his daughter Angela Betts; his son Mario Hayes and his son Edward Berralle Hayes, II;
Services will be held on Friday, October 7, 2022, at 11:30 am at the Grimes-Akes Family Funeral Home Chapel, located at 500 W. 7th Street, Corona, CA 92882. The viewing will be from 0930-
11:30 am.
His final resting place will be at the Riverside National Cemetery located at 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, CA 92518. The burial will take place at 1:30 pm.
