On the afternoon of January 17, 2023, Donald (Don) George Akins, Sr. departed this world at the age of 83 surrounded by loved ones in his home in Moreno Valley, California. Born in Bunker, Missouri in 1939 to Noah and Clara Akins, Don lived a colorful life devoted to his family and dedicated to the Gospel Ministry. In 1966, he married Patricia Ann Myllo who has lovingly stood by his side through the many decades of their marriage.
After graduating from Bunker High School in 1956, Don joined the United States Air Force where he served for four years, earning a Good Conduct Medal in 1959. He was stationed at Chanute AFB in Illinois and served in both Tripoli, Libya and at Lajes Field on Terceira Island in Azores, Portugal. Following his military service, Don worked on the Apollo Program in the Space Division of North American Rockwell Corporation which included the historic launching of Apollo 8, the first human spacecraft to reach the moon, in 1968. He then worked as a truck driver for more than 20 years, retiring from Georgia Pacific in 1996. Don’s true calling, however, was that of the ministry and his CB handle among other truckers was known as “preacher.” Ordained in 1982, Don led a small but faithful congregation at the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Moreno Valley for many years, providing counsel and comfort to his congregants through the study and teachings of the Bible.
Don was also passionate about wood-working and masonry, using his talents to rebuild the home in which he lived in Moreno Valley for 44 years with his beloved wife Patricia. He never hesitated to lend a tool or a hand to a neighbor or friend in need. A raconteur and lover of history, he enjoyed telling stories of his youth and his many life’s adventures, delighting his listeners with his charm and sense of humor.
Don is preceded in death by his brother Jimmy; his sisters Dorothy, Helen, Shirley, and Sandy; his daughters Tari and Tina; and his son, Don Jr. He is survived by his wife Patricia; his daughters Rita, Pamela, and Elizabeth; his grandchildren, Angie, Frankie, Nikki, Sarah, Jared, Jacob, and Jonah; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be on Friday, January 27, 2023 at 11 O'Clock In The Morning in Grimes-Akes Family's "Grace Chapel" Corona, California.
