Buford Douglas “Doug” Graham passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025, at the age of
96. A devoted husband, father, and patriot, Doug lived a life defined by honor, curiosity,
and kindness.
Born on July 10, 1928, in Denver, Colorado, to Buford Bryan Graham and Kathleen
Anita O’Schaugnessy, Doug grew up in Long Beach, California, on Morningside Drive.
He loved the beach, playing tennis, and challenging friends to games of chess. But as
the only son, he also took his responsibilities seriously, often helping his father with
chores, even when it meant missing out on fun with friends.
Doug pursued his dream of becoming a pilot with unwavering focus. After graduating
high school, he attended UCLA before joining the Air Force and continuing his training
at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. His distinguished military career
included service in Vietnam and postings across the globe. While stationed at Tyndall
Air Force Base in Florida, Doug met the love of his life, Lee. They welcomed their first
son, Craig, while stationed in Scunthorpe, England. Their second son, Christopher, was
born while Doug was deployed in Vietnam and the family was living in Arizona.
A skilled and passionate aviator, Doug flew a wide array of aircraft including the B-29, T-
6, T-33, B-47, and C-130. He also found great meaning in mentoring future leaders,
serving as an ROTC instructor at both Dartmouth University and Angelo State
University. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of Major, having served as Chief
of Operations at March Air Force Base.
Following his military service, Doug embarked on a successful second career in
commercial real estate, earning recognition in 1985 for his excellence in the field. Even
in retirement, he remained active traveling internationally with family and continuing to
share his wisdom, generosity, and ever-present good humor.
Doug is survived by his son Craig and daughter-in-law Laurie. He was preceded in
death by his beloved wife, Lee, and his son, Christopher.
Doug’s life was a testament to loyalty, perseverance, and quiet strength. He will be
deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Graveside Service will be on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at Riverside National Cemetery at 1:15 pm.
