BETTY TOWNSEND Obituary

Betty June Townsend completed her journey on earth on
January 19, 2023, at the age of 100+6 months. She passed in
her apartment at Magnolia Grand Senior Independent Living
apartments in Riverside, CA where she had lived for the last
17 years. Betty was the last of 5 siblings, 3 brothers and one
sister. All of whom have predeceased her.
She was born into a family of enormous love, if not wealth,
and grew up in the small town of Wheelersburg, Ohio. When
she was a little girl her greatest joy was helping her grandma
feed the chickens, gather the eggs and milk the cow. She
graduated from Wheelersburg High School with outstanding
achievements and a boy friend, George Robert Townsend.
They were married soon after she graduated. Bob, as he was
known to family and friends, was the love of her life. While he
was stationed in France during WWII, she lived in Columbus,
Ohio, with her sister’s family and worked in an munitions
plant. When he came home, they settled in Dayton where she
found employment with National Typewriter, Inc.; until her’s
and Bob’s retirement. Eventually they moved to California to
join her parents, Spurgeon and Stella Van Hoose, and her
sister and family.
Betty loved to read, work crossword puzzles, play the
piano, swim and play along with the Jeopardy contestants.
All her family and friends knew better than to call her when it
was time for Jeopardy. She also was an avid bowler. She was
a valuable team member on her National office bowling team.
They were league-champions many times.
Having no children of their own, they were satisfied to be
the “Favorite Aunt and Uncle” to his and hers nieces and
nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; and some great,
great ones, too, who are now scattered from coast to coast.
All, who mourn her passing.
To her great sorrow, Bob predeceased her in 1987. But
that didn’t end her love. To her last breath, she was his wife.
By her insistence, there will be no funeral. “All I want is to
be with Bob,” she said. And that is where she shall be. She
will be interned with him at the Riverside National Cemetery;
together forever. Until we meet again, may God hold you in
his arms. You left us with wonderful memories. We love you.
